CLUB HISTORY    (check the home page for more TCoP history!)

the following is a newspaper article published the day before the 1st Annual Dinner held on 12/12/1912:
“The Transportation Club"
Every Business Man Invited to its Banquet at the Jefferson Hotel tomorrow Night
The great banquet of the Transportation Club takes place at the Jefferson hotel tomorrow night at 7 o’clock.  The members desire that the business men of the city shall attend this for the reason that Mr. M. L. Bell, general attorney of the Rock Island who will speak, represents a corporation that has extensive interests in Peoria and whose progress has been co-incident with the growth and progress of the city.  The Rock Island is now about to help build a viaduct on Bridge Street, and has given the city a long stretch of land for a public landing for steamboats, and Mr. Bell’s utterances therefore will be of great interest to the citizens of Peoria
E. F. Baldwin, editor of The Star will also deliver an address on “Transportation.”  Mr.  Baldwin has been an active figure in the progress of the city for upwards of half a century, and is in a position to speak authoritatively on the subject.
Mr. Bell is expected to arrive in the city in the afternoon and he will be met by a delegation of railroad men.  L. L. Hyde, is President of the organization and A. S. Howells is Secretary.  Mr. Hyde will preside at the banquet.
The members wish to impress upon the business and professional men of Peoria that the banquets are not confined to the membership, but that a cordial invitation is extended for everyone to attend.  The tickets are but a dollar and a half and may be obtained at the Jefferson Hotel.
Word received in the city at noon today was to the effect that Mr. Bell would be accompanied by a number of prominent Rock Island officials, including A. C. Ridgeway, vice president; Mr. Snyder, general freight agent; Mr. Patterson, assistant general freight agent; Mr. Leahy, general passenger agent; Mr. Allen, passenger traffic manager.”
It seems that in the early 1900’s, the importance of railroads and it terminals were extremely important to a community.   That was one of the main reasons for the creation of the Transportation Club, to establish a favorable relationship between railroad people, the shippers and local community government officials.  As time went by, in addition to the rail/barge relationship the trucking industry was also drawn in and today we are starting to integrate the airline industry as well.
I will have more updates on the history of the club we move into our centennial year.  If you have any items, articles, pictures, etc., of historical significance about the club and are willing to share them please contact me at 309-274-3235 or eoelkers@netzero.net.  You will also find me at the club grounds at most events
